My research into Argumentation, an interdisciplinary area of pragmatic linguistics, is collaborative with Dr John Richardson, a Lecturer in Media and Communication Studies at Loughborough University.
Our work focuses on developing an account of argument and definition of fallacies by using empirical research into language pathologies, news media, and Grice’s theory of language and follows the pragma-dialectic program. Our most recent research has taken two strands: one using argument to reveal implicit prejudice in print journalism (you can find a representative paper here); the other examines how Asperger sufferers understand argument.
